Nên phân biệt 2 thuật ngữ như thế nào?

Như trên , về cơ bản freight forwarding (hay giao nhận vận tải) là dịch vụ vận chuyển hàng hóa từ một điểm này đến một địa điểm khác (bằng một hay nhiều phương thức vận tải). Trong khi đó, logistics bên thứ ba (3PL) bao gồm vận chuyển, lưu kho, quản lý hàng tồn... và có thể cung cấp cả dịch vụ forwarding theo cách hiểu truyền thống trước đây nữa.

Điều dễ gây nhầm lẫn là ở chỗ dịch vụ logistics bao gồm nhiều dịch vụ nhỏ khác nhau, nhưng không nhất thiết phải là tất cả các các dịch vụ này. Vì thế, nếu một công ty nhỏ chỉ làm một hoặc một vài các dịch vụ đơn lẻ như lưu kho, đóng gói, khai thuê hải quan, vận tải bộ ... tức là đang làm một phần của dịch vụ logisitics tổng thể/tích hợp (integrated logistics), thì cũng có nghĩa công ty này đang làm dịch vụ logistics.

Như vậy , các công ty forwarding cung cấp dịch vụ vận chuyển bằng đường biển (seafreight), đường hàng không (airfreight), hay vận tải bộ (trucking) đều rất phù hợp với cách lập luận trên, và công ty này thừa nhận rằng đang làm logistics. Theo cách này, hiện nay ở Việt Nam, rất nhiều công ty lớn nhỏ có chữ logistics trong tên gọi của mình.
